The Camera:
The invention of cameras is motivated by the humankind’s overwhelming need for and interest in optics. The revolution has its origins centuries back, during the time the ancient Chinese and Greeks used an optical device called the ‘camera obscura’ to draw or view objects by projecting the image on to a screen (Bellis, n.d.). Drawing on the concept of this camera obscura, Joseph Nicephore Niepce developed the first photographic image in the early 1800s. While the camera obscura was primarily used for drawing and tracing images, Niepce used a paper sheet coated with silver salts in the camera obscura and exposed it to light for several days to develop the first photo picture (Niépce and the Invention of Photography, n.d.). This paper sheet was put in the box and it captured an image on it, which was the negative photograph. The silver salts darkened under light exposure and the resultant image was in inverted colors. When the paper sheet was taken out of the box, the whole of it blackened. However, Niépce did succeed in producing the first photograph in human history and created the first prototype of modern day photographs (Bellis, n.d.). That indeed was an ‘eureka’ moment for the camera technology.
The Aeroplane:
The invention of the airplane or aeroplane was born out of an urge to fly like the birds, to empower the skies. The invention has finally been attributed to the Wright brothers – Wilbur and Orville Wright, although many argue that this was not necessarily an American invention as the art of flying was conceived and developed by many others prior to the Wright brothers (Archer, 2014). It is true that the Wright brothers were the first to fly a manned and powered flight, but the discovery of flying or the attempts to fly high were made much before. Like the camera, this invention was also the result of an overwhelming desire.
The human kind always wanted to fly like the birds. Many centuries back, people used to tie man-made wings onto their arms and tried to fly and some even used machines with wings called the ‘ornithopters’ (A History of the Airplane, n.d.). In his historical account ‘The Aeroplane‘, Charles H. Gibbs-Smith attribute the Chinese with the invention of the first successful free flight by a man-made heavier-than-air system with propellers (made of bird feathers) and flown by a wooden or whalebone bow (Taylor, 1971). Then in the 1780s, aeronauts flew balloons filled with hot air or hydrogen gas. These were direction-less, uncontrolled flying and therefore, triggered more thought and experimentation into the art of flying.
The Robot:
The origins of the robot trace back to 400-350 BC when a mathematician named Archytas constructed a bird-like wooden machine and powered its movements with steam (Hiskey, 2010). This was the first known robot to mankind and an invention that changed the world of humans like no one ever imagined. Archytas later came to be known as the ‘Father of Mechanical Engineering’ (Hiskey, 2010) and his robotic bird paved the way for many more brains to improvise further robots. Robots were a natural culmination of man’s need to ‘get things done’ without having to do anything himself. It was overwhelming to watch a non-human, inanimate object move on its own with human-induced force.
Thereafter, around 250 BC, an inventor and physicist from Greece called Ctesibus invented a water-clock to tell time almost accurately (Asimov, n.d.). His automatic clock also had movable figures on them (robots). The Greeks were fascinated with all sorts of automata and kept inventing mechanical toys, clocks, theatrical items, etc.
The assignment requirement was to cover three different technologies, which the assignment writer covered, additionally our writer made sure that APA style referencing was followed and over 15 academic references were used to compile this university assignment.
