Climate Change | Assignment Help
Introduction:
World is going through a phase of climate change. This climate change has influenced the business operations around the world. Especially in the under developed countries the impact of climate change is quite evident. Assessments of adaptation (i.e. response to the impacts of climate change) are linked to the development status of developing countries and those with economic in transition (McMichael, 2003).
Mike Sewell FCPA, a general manager and company secretary in, “The Nossal Institute For Global Health,” an Australian based company involved in improving health conditions in under developed countries, observed that such countries with shortage of resources and poor infrastructure are more exposed to the effects of climate changes.
Sewell emphasized the need to accept the fact that things are really changing in our world and to save our next generation all the communities have to unite and take some action.
He laid more responsibilities on accountants in designing the schemes for minimizing the effects of climate change in Australia. Claiming that such schemes may be expensive but contrarily it will benefit our upcoming generation in future.
Barriers in Operation:
Over the last 50 years there’s a significant change in the global environment. Increased human activities have released exorbitant amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere resulting in increased global warming. The impacts of climate change will fall disproportionately upon developing countries and the poor persons within all countries, and thereby exacerbate inequities in health status and access to adequate food, clean water, and other resources (Grover,2004). The core operation of Nossal is in countries with weak health infrastructure, the effects of climate change have raised barriers for Nossal. The company is already encountering with many killer diseases like diarrhea, malnutrition, malaria, dengue and hepatitis, whereas the effects of climate change has further worsen the situation as these diseases are highly climate-sensitive.
Nossal has a target of completing its task by 2015; it has to combat with the continuous changes in climate, without any intervals in its working process. Creating awareness among the general public and combating with such diseases more research work and increase man power is needed. Thus straining the company’s allocated budget.
Communal Factors Effecting Support in Health Issues:
Every society or community possesses some social issues. It is not possible to mention a single society in the world that is free from all issues. Social problem are related to the fabric of the community including conflicts among the interests of community.
The major issues faced by Nossal in many countries are poverty, education and pollution. Due to lack of resources and less developed industries an apparent number of public is unemployed, healthy living standards are beyond their reach. Inadequate food and poor quality of living has raised their miseries. They are more exposed to multiple diseases. Regardless of ethnic group, people who live in poverty are more likely to be in poor health than people who do not (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2010). Nossal can provide them with medicines and support in their health problems but what to do with the poverty factor, as it is the responsibility of the Government. Poverty could cause a rapid spread of diseases and the large burden through the resulting disabilities would reinforce poverty (Hein, 2003).
Secondly, it is easier to create awareness and transfer the message to the literate people than to illiterate. Mainly people who need support in health issues are less educated and convincing them for better health standards is not an easy task.
An issue where Nossal seems to be helpless is pollution. The same pollution has doubled the health related issues particularly in areas with low living standards.
Accountants Share in Climate Change Issues:
Climate Change is natural phenomena that has taken place over millennia, all the business operations around the globe are affected by this change. The most visible effect of climate change is on energy cost and the growing monetization of carbon.
Leading global companies have come to recognize that environmental accounting can play an important role, not only to prevent and restrict negative environmental impacts but also to facilitate positive and proactive actions (Schaltegger, Bennett & Burritt, 2006). The accountants have to develop skills and tools to ascertain a low budget scheme encountering with climate change effects on business. In terms of climate change their role is significant in assessing, reporting and auditing sustainability information. Carbon emission is a major concern around the globe, in order to be able to deal with this accountants should estimate the commercial risk of future carbon constraints, and their likely impact upon corporate performance and shareholder value.
