Assignment 1: Essay

1. Examine the significance of "Orientalism" in the haute couture designs of Paul Poiret by analysing at least four garment designs. Also refer to relevant art works from the same period leading up to World War One.
2. Provide an analysis of how the haute couture designs created by Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel reflected artistic and socio-cultural change in the twentieth century from her early beginnings to her comeback in the 1950s.
3. Analyse ways in which elements of Surrealism and notions of femininity became significant in haute couture garments designed by Elsa Schiaparelli. Look mainly at relevant art and designs from the 1920s to 1930s, and mention artistic collaborations where relevant.
4. Referring to at least four artworks, analyse how some Surrealist artists used or referred to "mannequins" in their artistic practice to comment on fashion and notions of femininity in the 1930s.
