PUBH6007: Public Health Program Portfolio Assessment Overview

In this subject, the process of public health program design, implementation and evaluation is  broken into two individual submissions and two group submissions that together address each step  in the creation of a public health program to target a health challenge/issue with your chosen  community.

Group Formation and Topic Choice

You will be organised into groups by your learning facilitator in the first module of the trimester.  Once in your groups, you need to choose a health problem/challenge that relates to one of the  public health themes listed below. Your health challenge/issue should have a clear target audience.  You will design a program to address this challenge/issue in this target population.

Public Health Themes

  • Mental health
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
  • Population health
  • Non-communicable disease
  • Infectious disease
  • Social and behavioural sciences
  • Health system
  • eHealth/mhealth/digital health
  • Geriatric health
  • Cultural and diverse communities health

Assessment 1: Needs Assessment (Individual)

Needs assessment are crucial in program design, implementation and evaluation in public
health, as they form the foundation for the evidence-based approach required to design and
evaluate relevant, credible and contextually appropriate public health programs.
In this assessment, each individual in the group will need to perform a needs assessment
associated with your groups chosen health challenge/target population. To generate a
comprehensive understanding of the community need, the group discussion should inform
the need that each student will focus on under a particular public health theme. Each
individual will submit a 1,000 word (+/–10%) needs assessment report.

Assessment 2: Design, Plan, Implementation and Evaluation (Group)

Part A: Group Presentation: Objectives, Strategies and Logic Model

The culmination of individual needs assessments will mean that your group now has a
comprehensive and complex understanding of the need within your target population. It is
now time to start planning! In Assessment 2, your group will be required to present a
blueprint of your program plan to your fellow students. In this presentation (10-minyour
group needs to outline your s objectives and strategies and present your logic model. You
will also be expected to answer questions (for 3 minutes) from your peers and your learning
facilitator.

Part B: Group Report: Program Planning, Implementation and Evaluation

Incorporating the feedback provided by your learning facilitator and your peers from
Part A, your group now needs to complete your program plan. This report (1,500 words
+/–10%) will be a clear and concise presentation of the results of your group’s collaboration
through each phase of the program planning, implementation and evaluation process.
All key diagrams also need to be presented in this report.

Assessment 3: Reflection on Program Planning Process and Collaboration (Individual)

Critical reflection is an important part of your professional development as a public health
practitioner. The final assessment in this subject provides each individual group member
with the opportunity to write a reflection (800 words +/–10%) on the process of public
health program planning. A template is provided with questions to help facilitate your
reflection on the challenges you have faced and the growth you have experience working in
a collaborative environment to create a complex and comprehensive public health program.
