Description / Requirements

Aim: The aim of Part B is to apply performance management and reward management principles to the performance of your group. There are two elements to this assessment each part equating to five marks and 500 words for each.

This assessment asks you to reflect on the performance management of your group in working together, planning and conducting the research sharing tasks, writing, editing, proofreading and submitting the assignment. (5 marks)

You are then asked to apply reward management principles to your team member based on their effort (5 marks).

If you have never written a reflection before, then please access the resources related to writing reflections on the Cloud site before you begin this part of your assignment.

Performance Management

Using situational examples, how did your team:

  • Decide on its goals
  • Allocate the tasks involved in conducting the investigation and the preparation, proofreading and submission of the report
  • Work together
  • Manage itself with respect to time management, communication methods and conflict resolution

Include your responses to the following questions:

  • How would you describe your team’s leadership style?
  • What skills did each member bring to the team?
  • How did you support each other?

Other aspects that you might consider include

  • Communication

How well did your group communicate? What if any were the issues you encountered and how did you resolve them?

  • Ethical issues

Were there any issues with regard to obtaining or reporting on the information for the assignment?

  • Team conflict

Sometimes despite our best efforts, conflict occurs in the workplace. Conflict can emanate from task related causes or individual differences. Did you or your group experience any sort of conflict. If so how did you resolve these issues?

  • Group Dynamics

How did your group function? How were tasks delegated and decisions made? What, if anything would you have liked your group to have done differently? Why?

When considering ‘performance’ you might reflect on the fundamentals of performance management. It was noted that ‘performance’ can be viewed as both an ‘outcome’ and as a ‘behaviour’.

Reward Management

To acknowledge the reward management component of this unit, you have an opportunity to award a mark out of five (5) to your team member.

Think carefully about their contribution to the group and task. What mark (out of 5) would you give to your team member? And Why? Refer back to your lecture notes on merit pay. Which of the three types of merit pay schemes (performance-related pay; competency-related pay and contribution-related pay) underpins your mark allocation? Why did you choose this option? What factors did you consider important when reviewing their performance and awarding them a mark?

  1. Ensure you have carefully assessed your team member’s performance
  2. Provide a brief rationale for the mark you awarded each team member.

The purpose of this part of the assessment is for you to evaluate the performance of your team member and hypothetically apply marks to their performance.

Word limit: 1000 words

Formatting: 1.5 line spacing; 12-point font; Times New Roman or Arial

Reference style: Students must correctly use the Harvard style of referencing.

Type of the File: MS Word Document Only, PDF is not accepted.

Submission Instructions

Submit your individual reflection (Assessment 1 – Part B) in MS Word format via the corresponding category under the “Assessment” menu on the MMH231 CloudDeakin Unit site. 

You must keep a backup copy of every assignment you submit, until the marked assignment has been returned to you.  In the unlikely event that one of your assignments is misplaced, you will need to submit your backup copy.

Any work you submit may be checked by electronic or other means for the purposes of detecting collusion and/or plagiarism.

When you are required to submit an assignment through your CloudDeakin unit site, you will receive an email to your Deakin email address confirming that it has been submitted. You should check that you can see your assignment in the Submissions view of the Assignment dropbox folder after upload, and check for, and keep, the email receipt for the submission.

Notes

  • Penalties for late submission: The following marking penalties will apply if you submit an assessment task after the due date without an approved extension: 5% will be deducted from available marks for each day up to five days, and work that is submitted more than five days after the due date will not be marked. You will receive 0% for the task. 'Day' means working day for paper submissions and calendar day for electronic submissions. The Unit Chair may refuse to accept a late submission where it is unreasonable or impracticable to assess the task after the due date.

  • Building evidence of your experiences, skills and knowledge (Portfolio) - Building a portfolio that evidences your skills, knowledge and experience will provide you with a valuable tool to help you prepare for interviews and to showcase to potential employers. There are a number of tools that you can use to build a portfolio.  You are provided with cloud space through OneDrive, or through the Portfolio tool in the Cloud Unit Site, but you can use any storage repository system that you like. Remember that a Portfolio is YOUR tool. You should be able to store your assessment work, reflections, achievements and artefacts in YOUR Portfolio. Once you have completed this assessment piece, add it to your personal Portfolio to use and showcase your learning later, when applying for jobs, or further studies.  Curate your work by adding meaningful tags to your artefacts that describe what the artefact represents.
