Background: Numeracy as a social practice is a concept that is shared by socio-cultural understandings of numeracy as what people do with mathematics.
Aim: This task is designed to consolidate and demonstrate your understanding of what it means to understand numeracy as a social and cultural practice, and how it can inform pedagogical practice. Structure: The task is structured in two parts as follows -
- In the first part of the task, you will explain the motivations and principles of key sociocultural perspectives of numeracy. Choose three of the following socio-cultural perspectives as your focus: Numeracy as a Social Practice; Funds of Knowledge; Ethnomathematics; Critical Numeracy. (~ 700 words)
This part must be supported by close reference to at least three required subject readings from weeks 1 to 6.
- In the second part of the task, you will analyse two scholarly studies of pedagogical practice and explain how those studies exemplify theoretical principles of numeracy as social practice (~ 400 words each)

- The assignment coversheet must be completed and attached at the front of your work.
- Use double spacing.
- Leave a minimum of 2 cm margins on all four sides of the page.
- Use a 12 point font.
- Number your pages.
- Submit your assignment in Word format, NOT pdf
Referencing: A minimum of 6 readings (4 subject readings + 2 scholarly studies) must be cited and included in the reference list. Each in-text citation must include a page number that supports the specific point you make in your writing – whether you are quoting directly from the source or paraphrasing. Standards: Ensure your writing maintains a formal, academic register with a minimum of 6 readings from the subject, all cited correctly. As academic writing and citations are hurdle requirements for this task any work that has not been proofread for spelling, punctuation and grammatical accuracy and/or APA v7 referencing that is not used accurately for in-text citations and the reference list will not be assessed.
Work that does not meet the required standard of academic writing will have one opportunity to be resubmitted with corrections within one week of notification. Resubmitted work will receive a maximum grade of a 50% Pass.
