Characteristic of Harvard reference list

A Harvard reference list has the following attributes.

  • Write on a separate sheet at the end of your documents
  • It is structured in alphabetical order by the name of the author. In case there is no author then the title of the document is used. Furthermore, if multiple works of the same author are used, then arranged according to date.
  • There should be double spaced between each reference.
  • Mention all the references that you use in-text citations.

Authors/Editors

  • One, who writes a particular text such as a journal article, book, etc., is named as an author.
  • If someone compiles a book, dictionary, or a coauthor of the book with several authors, is termed an editor.
  • If there are two authors whose family name is the same and published their work in the same year, include their initials in the in-text. E.g. E Peters 2007, P Peters 2007. Provide the remaining details in the reference list alphabetically according to their initials.
  • When there are more than four authors, use the name of the first author followed by ‘et al, and provide detail of all in the reference list.

Dates

  • If there is a website, book, articles with no publication date write n.d.
  • When two books or articles are published in the same year, use the letters ‘a’ and ‘b’, both in the in-text and reference list e.g. Smith 2000a, Smith 2000b.

Editions

  • When there is a book with more than one edition, then mention the number of edition that you utilize in your work

Place of publication

  • If there is a book with different places of publication, write the first place.
  • In case of no place of publication-write n.p.

Pagination

  • is used to refer for one page, pp. for more than one page.

Multiple and secondary sources

  • If you want to use more than one source in the same place, then put a reference in alphabetical order inside the brackets. (e.g. Brown 2003; Miller 2009; Smith 2001).
  • In the case of secondary sources, mentioned both the sources in the text (e.g. Smith 2001 in Wright 2004) while mentioned the name of the book that you have to use physically (e.g. Wright, IM 2004, How to quote, Book Press, Adelaide).
