Role of SUNNAH in attaining TAQWA (piety)
The sunnah of Prophet (PBUH) is an essential source of knowledge and guidance after the Quran to attain taqwa. The Quran and sunnah are the two main components of Islam. Quran can be termed as the theory of the Allah’s commandments and guidelines that are mandatory for the entire Muslim community to spend a perfect life. Whereas the sunnah is the practical guidance for a perfect life as per Allah’s instruction based on the teachings and practices of the prophet (PBUH) and Quran.
Taqwa can be termed as the rules and regulations formulated by Allah and cited in Quran, which restricts from the unethical acts and sins. Taqwa is the awareness of constantly being observed by the God, whatever we do or how we act would be noted and for the wrong doings there would be punishments and rewards for the good deeds. The Prophet Muhammad’s life is a perfect role model for us to attain taqwa. Prophet through his habits, attitude and performance of religious obligations had elaborated the importance of taqwa and how to adopt the same for our living. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) revitalised personal awareness and loving awe of God, which Muslims call taqwa, and a resulting commitment to truth and justice. This assay will examine the sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) which constitute taqwa.
Role of Sunnah in attaining taqwa;
The sunnah is the fundamental basis of the religion Islam. Taqwa is fulfilling Allah’s commands and abstain from committing sins. It is the internalization of God’s will. In common terms taqwa is defined as the fear of God, thus due to the same fear of God we refrain to indulge into any act or habit that had been forbidden in Islam. Not only refraining from the forbidden acts but when an individual develops the perception that God is always there he will modify his life style according to the principles of Islam and would attempt to do more good deeds in urge of attaining more rewards. Though the importance and main concept of taqwa is defined in Quran but it might be misinterpreted or it might not inspire the reader. Also the reader may not convince other followers to adopt taqwa in their life style. However, if an individual adopts and practice taqwa efficiently in his daily life routine would effectively motivate others to adopt the same. Since Islam is an important constituent in the everyday lives of Muslims, Islamic ethics and morality must be reflected in all walks of life of Muslims.
Sunnah is the life style, daily practices, habits, behaviour and deeds of the Prophet (PBUH). Allah in Quran has laid down complete principles, bylaws, guidelines and solutions for a successful life for the entire mankind on earth. Whereas to clearly understand that what is the exact meaning and concept of the guidance and instructions of Allah drafted in Quran, a good interpreter is required. It is obligatory that text in Quran should be understood clearly and followed obediently, attaining wrong meaning of the text would cause astray of the followers of Islam. Allah the Beneficent and the Merciful sent his Prophet (PBUH) as his messenger to describe the guidelines and knowledge mentioned in Quran through his actions, deeds and speeches. Not only the words of Allah that were revealed in Quran but also specific knowledge that was revealed to the Prophet (PBUH), the Prophet (PBUH) conveyed the same to the world in such a manner that it inspired the mankind and changed life of millions of people. The Quran is the source that sets the rules, values, and standards which the Sunnah explains and elaborates further (Bukhari et al, 2004).
Importance of sunnah in our life;
Blessed with the divine knowledge and authority to convey Allah’s message to the mankind, the entire life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is true example of an exemplary life in exact compliance with the Islamic principles. Every single act of the Prophet (PBUH) conveys a message. The prophecies Prophet (PBUH) had made for the future did occurred during His lifetime and even after Him, which the whole world has witnessed.
